La historia se centra en una pareja: Kate (Thandie Newton) y Martin (Cillian Murphy), que intentan reconstruir su relación tomándose un descanso en una isla remota.
Todo va bien hasta que aparece un militar, Jack (Jamie Bell) y les cuenta que un virus mortal está matando a millones de personas en el continente.
